A Letter from Our Educational Officer

Re: Sponsorship Opportunity

The United States Power Squadrons (USPS) is a non-profit educational organization, founded in 1914, whose mission is to improve maritime safety and enjoyability through classes in seamanship, navigation, and other related subjects. The USPS comprises approximately 45,000 members organized into 450 squadrons across the United States and in some US territories. It is the largest U.S. non-profit boating organization and has been honored by three U.S. presidents for its civic contributions. District 3 on Long Island is home to Great South Bay Power Squadron, a Unit of USPS. We operate locally to further the mission of USPS in this area.

New York has long recognized and stressed the importance of educating boaters, beginning as early as 1959 when the boater education course for youths, known at the time as “Make Sure, Make Shore” was instituted. Since then we have learned that education is vital to everyone, not just our youth. Last year Nassau and Suffolk Counties there were a combined 55 ‘serious accidents’ that resulted in 24 significant injuries. Additionally, there were several single vessel incidents in which operator error caused a loss of life that doesn’t classify as an accident. What causes recreational boating accidents on the water in New York and what has the accident data told us? Clearly the leading cause of boating deaths is drowning. Since 2005, 87% of all these fatalities were not wearing a life jacket. Further an additional 11.9% of those were required by law to wear a PFD (Personal Flotation Device) at the time of the accident (children). It is impossible to tell how many people have been saved by wearing a PFD but the potential consequences of not wearing one are clearly evident.

The fundamental problem is a lack of knowledge. While the classroom training that we provide is comprehensive, it is challenging to demonstrate real world scenarios in a classroom setting. The objective of this fundraiser is to allow us to purchase the Boating Skills Virtual Trainer (BSVT), the industry’s best interactive simulation-based boating safety program and powerful instructor tool. The BSVT allows students to maneuver a “Boston Whaler” on a lake of 3.5 miles x 4 miles in a virtual mode where there are no other boats, no bystanders and no risks. Exercises are built in to allow an instructor to direct maneuvers from basic to advanced by adjusting wind and current direction and strength. Students can learn in a controlled environment where an error in handling will not result in any real damage or loss of life. The simulator will allow the students to perform the maneuvers and reinforce the training objectives that they have learned in the class. All lessons occur on an open, expansive lake, which includes a complete marina, navigational markings (range markers, day beacons, channel markers, etc.), beach area, and shallow water. Distinct sections of the lake are set aside for docking, slalom, passing/meeting/overtaking other boats, mooring, and other open water maneuvers.  Newest features include stop watch and timer functions as well as a virtual chart plotter.

The Boating Skills Virtual Trainer received the 2015 Innovations Award from The National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA)  at the 2015 Annual NASBLA Conference in Wichita, Kansas.
